Mobility Challenge Without Sight event gallery
Lighthouse’s Mobility Challenge Without Sight looked like it might not happen on Saturday morning October 19, as storms moved through Sarasota. The challenges were to be spread out among local merchants, with maps and clues as a guide. Sending participants out on city streets would not do. We moved the entire event into Selby Library, which was intended to be our starting and finish point. Thanks to the hospitality extended by the library, the event went on, for those who braved the weather to get there. And thank you to the downtown businesses who were game to participate.
Challenge 1: Eyes closed, use a white cane to navigate. The event was held in observance of White Cane Awareness Day.
Challenge 2: Write your name, in Braille. Worksheets have fill-in-the-dots to make Braille letters, or try a Brailler machine.
Challenge 3: Counting Money. The idea, walk into Buddy Brew coffee shop, pull out your wallet, and count correct amount of bills using a phone app and sorting coins by touch.
Challenge 4: Use writing aids. Sit right down and write yourself a letter.
Challenge 5: Reading Braille. Children’s books in Braille and cards with Braille message on front, printed translation inside.
Challenge 6: Talking app to read documents. A restaurant menu and other documents can be read with a phone app. Lemon Tree Kitchen kindly provided a menu, clearly printed, but all text is difficult for the vision impaired.
Challenge 7: The sense of Sound. A group exercise to listen to a pattern of claps, snaps and slaps, and join the rhythm without watching other participants. The original destination was The Violin Shop on 1st Street.
Challenge 8: Dog or no dog? A fun quiz about guide dogs, relocated from Wet Noses on Main Street.
White Cane Safety and low vision awareness. The City of Sarasota, Sarasota County, Southeast Guide Dogs, the Division of Blind Services, Florida Department of Transportation and the Lions Club had information tables at the event. The Lions offered free Diabetes screening.
