Who We Are

The Lighthouse is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency dedicated to assisting all people with vision loss or blindness. Based in Sarasota, Florida, the Lighthouse provides free, professionally taught classes and sponsors support groups across five counties. Through interview and assessment, classes and resources are carefully chosen to provide each client with skills to live independently and with confidence to undertake activities. The Lighthouse offers education, support and motivation within an environment that is enriching for individuals with vision loss.

Our five county region includes Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Charlotte and Highlands. The communities we serve include the cities of Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmetto, Ellenton, Osprey, Nokomis, Venice, Englewood, North Port, Arcadia, Sebring and Avon Park.

Advocacy

The Lighthouse supports and participates in White Cane Day activities and Florida State Legislature's Annual Vision Summit. The Lighthouse is a member of the Florida Association of Agencies Serving the Blind (FAASB). The Lighthouse promotes all efforts that support people who are blind or have limited vision.

Our Mission

The Lighthouse of Mansota exists to advance the individual growth and independence of adults and children with vision loss. We are committed to extend our educational and training resources in the community and to promote advocacy of and for adults and children with vision loss.

Services Avaliable

Independent Living

Adaptive methods and techniques become powerful tools in performing everyday tasks. Clients learn the 'how to' in going about their daily activities such as, preparing meals, shopping, managing money, marking appliances, writing checks, etc.

Transition for Teenage Students

The Lighthouse Transition Program gives young adults (ages 14-22) the chance to have the greatest possible competence, mastery and enjoyment of life. Success is possible through teamwork.

Assistive Technology Training

Personal computers or those at school and work can be adapted with special software. Magnification and speech output programs are available for review and purchase.

Orientation and Mobility

Orientation and Mobility training is provided in the home and in the community. Learning to travel safely, efficiently and independently within familiar and unfamiliar environments is the goal of O&M training.
